Bell, butt reservoir

With thanks to Beth of Amoskeag Auctions, Inc. for permission to post these pics.

The original auction blurb said: ".40 caliber, 39" barrel. This rifle dates probably from either the very early 19th or late 18th century. Rifle features a modified flintlock which has a pronounced teat at rear and is quite long at 7 3/4" in length. The lock is very lightly engraved "BELL" and has some somewhat rudimentary engraving at front and rear. The barrel bears a neat random pattern and is an overall smooth gray brown patina. The lock is similar in color and most metal surfaces are free of pitting. The walnut stock rates excellent with nice edges and a good deal of original finish. The canister butt is of iron and retains over 90% of its original leather covering. The lock needs some mechanical attention and the ramrod is missing. A very neat and early reservoir butt air rifle."
