Zeer, Ludwig butt reservoir

With thanks to Beth of Amoskeag Auctions, Inc. for permission to post these pics.

The original auction blurb said: ".45 caliber, 32" round barrel with octagonal breech section and nicely turned ring at transition which occurs at tip of forestock. This is a very fine antique air rifle. The lock is very nicely engraved with decorative floral engraving with "Ludwig Zeer" in small panel at very front of lock and a neat serpent’s face on front of cocking piece. The top of the barrel is inlaid in silver "Ludwig Zeer a Wienn" and is sighted with a simple front bead only. The frame of the gun is of brass and is nicely engraved with floral borders and a panoply of arms, the side plate and trigger guard are also of brass and have the same tasteful engraving. The wooden portion of the stock is quite small beginning just ahead of the reservoir and terminating just over an inch beyond the front of the lock. The stock features lovely raised carving around the trigger guard with fabulous relief floral carving between front of trigger guard and horn forend tip. The condition of this rifle is as wonderful as its quality and construction. The barrel retains a pleasing smooth and even brown patina overall. The lock is a handsome smooth gray patina. The brass portions of the rifle bear a pleasing untouched patina and the iron reservoir retains about 85% of its original leather covering. The walnut stock retains most of its original finish with a chip missing from front of lock plate. We have been unable to locate this maker in standard references, including under the name "Feer". A wonderful antique air rifle."
