With thanks to Mike Sharp and Lawrie A for facilitating (in 2010).

Giffard 6mm ball rifle. Gun length is 43 3/4" , barrel length is 26 1/2" .

This gun came initially with just a long black cylinder attached to it covered crudely with leather some time ago. I'm not discounting altogether the possibility of it being the original cylinder, it has male threads to connect it to the female thread on the gun, this is opposite to the common Giffards.

The gun is stamped up serial No.2. The smaller nickel plated cylinder is the correct fitting for this type of Giffard rifle, but does not show the weight of Co2 necessary for a fill as do the the more common cylinders .

A gun similar to this is depicted in "Guns told in Pictures" by Walter More, where the article states the gun discharges all the air at one go, that is definitely a No-No. Whether or not these very early models were originally designed for air is still not known, they work very well on Co2.
