Haenel Model-28 (police markings?)
With thanks to Steve.
He said on the airgunbbs.com: "Always read that there is no proof that the Haenel 28 was used for Military training. How about a Haenel 28 with German Police markings? See the butt with marking “lb/sl”. On a website on German gun markings this is the code for German Police L.B., Berlin. S.L., Lueneburg district. Plus the number put on the grip? "
Eddie said purely from a metalworker's point of view: "The butt stamp in the metal looks like a block stamp to me, ie. not separate letter stamps, these are hard to get a perfectly even impression with by their nature (have used them 100's of times at work), and often one side / one end will be more pronounced, the temptation then is try again, which often goes wrong and you get a shadow impression, or again, because of their nature the first impression is on the faint side
Also, not the easiest place to stamp a pistol and support it rigidly, unless maybe the grips were removed and butt placed over something (if indeed a void like a Webley for example), so that would compound the problem."
Steve checked with experts on the Luger forum and said: "The guy who wrote the book on police Lugers and administrator of the Luger Forum:
'Could be police, but I don't think so. Shooting clubs were all over europe - I'd be more inclined to think it was some kind of club, or even factory marking? i.e. factory club or usage'
Another post says Unit markings weren’t lower case."
